We often hear explanations of the Cross that imply Jesus died for the sake of God than humans. Wesley Rostoll in SEEING THE CROSS WITH NEW EYES does a fantastic job of defending another story according to Scriptures.
Chapter 3 is one of my favorites chapters. The author does a great job of explaining the Penal Substitution view of the Cross. Did God’s wrath need to be appeased? Did God require Jesus be killed so God only then could forgive us? I encourage you to read Wesley’s book to find out his perspective according to Scripture. He speaks of a God I can understand and appreciate.
Read chapters on what Jesus did not die for and what Jesus really died for. Wesley offers a fresh perspective than what you may have heard. Wesley also talks about Hell in the Book. Stay tuned! I think the author may have another book in him about this subject. Does God really torture forever those who don’t believe? Most of us imperfect humans wouldn’t even do that to our enemies.
The author suggests, rightly so in my opinion, that Jesus spoke and died for influential reasons. Jesus rarely taught in the way that we do today. His teachings were far more practical; one only has to look at His most famous of speeches, which is commonly referred to as the Sermon on the Mount.
Wesley concludes “This book has only attempted to look at some of the doctrines (those specifically pertaining to the cross) within popular Christianity in a new light. I hope that I have presented the cross from a perspective that will help others to see this as well.”
